"We relate to you their story in truth: they were youths who believed in their Lord, and We advanced them in guidance" (Quran 18:13).
What is the SAMY Program?
The Sacramento Academy for Muslim Youth (SAMY) is a program for high school students (ages 14-18). This unique program focuses on Islamic principles and intellectual discourse by selecting teens from all congregations and Masajid in the greater Sacramento area to unite under the banner of the Muslim Ummah. The program includes in class instruction, extra-curricular activities and community wide events. Each week, classes are held in the Youth room at the SALAM Islamic Center on Friday nights from 6:00PM to 9:00 PM. SAMY provides an enjoyable and secure environment for young Muslims to get together and relate issues that affect them. Students will come to understand the true essence of implementing Islam in their lives. Join us for groups discussions and projects, Islamic lectures, event planning, and field trips specifically designed to help develop young Muslim characters that are pleasing to Allah (SWT) and will lead our Ummah in the future.
Mission Statement:
SAMY is a unique youth driven program designed to hone the scholarship and leadership abilities of the Muslim Youth. SAMY strives to create an environment conducive to Islamic learning, character development, and leadership skills. In the Qur'an, Surah Al-Kahf (Verses 9-16) describes the plight of youths surrounded by idolaters who sought refuge in a cave. SAMY makes every effort with the grace of Allah (SWT), to create that same environment of refuge for youth who seek a place of Islamic values and taqwa (consciousness of Allah). Our goal is to develop American Muslims who are proud of their Islamic identity and understand their society while being aware of their responsibilities as citizens.
Islamic Learning:
Islamic lectures and discussion groups are conducted by the Youth Leadership Team (YLT), which oversees the religious curriculum of the SAMY program under the guidance of Imam Mohammad Abdul-Azeez. In the hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) stated that, "Allah will give shade to seven on the Day when there is no shade but His. [And of those seven] a youth who has been brought up in the worship of Allah " (Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 11, Number 629) The students of SAMY strive to gain the shade of Allah (SWT) through maintaining the tradition of sincere worship of Allah and attaining a strong Islamic education that will help our students throughout their deen and dunya.
Events:
SAMY is renowned for having great youth events! In the past we have successfully coordinated a special ALL Girls’ night, a Boys’ Interfaith Football Tournament, sleepovers and more. Prospective SAMY events include: basketball tournaments, an Islamic fashion show, College Days, Comedy Nights, Community Garage Sales, International Bazaars, Youth Camps, an Islamic History Exhibit, Qiyam Nights, and a Youth Conference!!
Field Trips:
Hands down, one of the best things about the SAMY program is the field trips! Every few weeks the youth will attend a different field trip aimed at presenting a realistic and tangible approach to concepts introduced in the classroom. Past field trips have included the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade, Muslim Cemetery, IHOP, and Muslim Unity Day at Great America, meeting a scholar, interfaith events, paintballing, art and science museums, and nature hikes.
Fees:
The fee for one semester of SAMY is $100, or $200 for the entirety of the school year. This includes discounts on field trips and supplies used in the classroom, but DOES NOT include the cost of complimentary Books. We will notify the youth prior to the events as to the cost of admission. Accommodations for financial aid will be made depending on individual situations. A variety of payment options are available.
Get Involved!
- Tell your family and friends about SAMY! The more the merrier; the SAMY program cordially invites youth from every congregation.
- Parents, encourage your kids. Parent participation is a MUST if this program is to be a success. Parents must make youth group participation a priority by providing transportation and financial support.
- Over 18? Chaperone! SAMY always needs helpers in the classroom and chaperones during events and field trips! If interested, please provide your contact information on the sign-up sheet below.
- Donate! This program offers an incredible outlet for teenagers throughout the city. Please help fund this effort and maintain costs by donating time, money, and supplies.
