Executive Director
General Description
The Executive Director (ED) is SALAM’s chief executive and operational leader, responsible for the effective overall management and administration of the organization across all current and future locations. The ED ensures alignment with SALAM’s mission and vision, advances Board-approved strategic priorities, strengthens community trust and engagement, and maintains operational excellence.
This role oversees day-to-day operations and maintains operational excellence across staff, contractors, and volunteer teams, programs, facilities, and organizational systems. The ED’s responsibilities are governed by SALAM’s Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws, rooted in the values and principles of the Islamic faith.
Key Responsibilities
Operations Management (Multi-Site)
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of SALAM across multiple locations, including supervision of employees, contractors, and volunteers.
- Build and maintain clear operational systems and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency, accountability, and quality across sites.
- Ensure optimal utilization, scheduling, maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and security of SALAM’s facilities and physical assets at each location.
- Manage SALAM’s technology systems and digital infrastructure, ensuring systems support multi-site operations.
- Maintain official records and ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations across all sites.
- Provide regular, comprehensive reports to the Board of Trustees on organizational status, site-level operations, risks, challenges, and opportunities.
- Support and coordinate the activities of committees and program teams, ensuring cross-site alignment and resourcing when needed.
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment that attracts and retains a diverse and motivated volunteer base across all locations.
- Represent SALAM in local and regional forums, strengthening partnerships, and safeguarding SALAM’s reputation and relationships.
Program & Community Leadership
- Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of SALAM’s religious, educational, youth, and community service programs across locations.
- Ensure programs are well-structured, appropriately staffed, and consistently communicated, with clear logistics, and participant experience.
- Strengthen community engagement through responsive communication, relationship-building, and community presence, including coordination with partner organizations.
- Oversee major community events and initiatives from planning through execution, ensuring excellence in logistics, staffing, safety, and communications.
- Support program leads and instructors with systems for registration, operations, volunteer support, and continuous improvement.
Facilities, Security, Safety & Risk
- Oversee facility operations and vendor relationships across all sites: preventative maintenance, repairs, capital improvements, custodial standards, and contractor management.
- Lead safety and security planning and implementation, including incident response coordination, security equipment oversight, and security-related policies and training.
- Coordinate operational readiness for high-attendance programs and events (traffic flow, crowd management, staffing, emergency plans).
- Ensure compliance with facility-related requirements, including insurance, inspections, accessibility considerations, and risk mitigation.
Financial Management & Internal Controls
- Develop and implement operational and financial plans in alignment with Board-approved strategic goals and multi-site needs.
- Administer the annual budget approved by SALAM’s membership and recommend amendments to the Board as needed.
- Monitor and manage expenses and program budgets to ensure alignment with organizational policy and financial constraints, including site-level tracking where applicable.
- Oversee financial transactions, including accounts payable/receivable, deposits, invoicing, and recordkeeping, ensuring strong internal controls and documentation practices.
- Coordinate with the Treasurer/Board and relevant finance support to ensure timely reporting, transparency, and audit-ready documentation.
- Support organizational financial sustainability by improving systems, controls, and reporting rhythms across all sites and program lines.
Fundraising, Donor Relations & Development
- Lead development planning and fundraising execution in partnership with the Board, supporting the Board’s fundraising responsibilities through donor cultivation, campaigns, and community engagement.
- Design and implement a long-term development plan to support financial sustainability, including operating costs across multiple sites and long-term capital needs.
- Ensure transparency, integrity, and timely stewardship in donor communications and fund usage, including clear reporting tied to specific projects/campuses where relevant.
- Collaborate with Board members and community leaders to strengthen donor relationships and expand SALAM’s support base.
Grants, Compliance & Partnerships
- Identify, pursue, and manage grants from public and private sources.
- Oversee grant compliance, deliverables, documentation, and reporting processes in coordination with staff, partners, and required stakeholders.
- Develop and manage MOUs/contracts as needed for programs, partnerships, rentals, and site-related projects, ensuring documentation supports compliance and risk management.
- Strengthen partnerships with schools, nonprofits, interfaith organizations, and civic institutions to advance SALAM’s mission and community impact.
Communications, Digital Presence & Public Representation
- Oversee SALAM’s communications strategy across all platforms, including website, email, social media, announcements, flyers, and community updates.
- Ensure messaging is consistent, timely, accurate, and aligned with SALAM’s values, tone, and brand standards across all locations.
- Serve as a primary representative/spokesperson of SALAM as appropriate, including media engagement when needed, in coordination with Board guidance.
- Maintain strong internal communication rhythms with staff, volunteers, program leads, and community stakeholders.
People Leadership (Staff, Contractors & Volunteers)
- Recruit, onboard, supervise, coach, and evaluate staff; create clear expectations, role clarity, accountability, and professional development.
- Ensure appropriate staffing coverage and leadership presence across all locations and program areas.
- Support a healthy team culture rooted in professionalism, respect, service, and excellence.
- Strengthen volunteer operations (recruitment, training, placement, retention) to support programs and community needs across sites.
- Recommend updates and improvements to organizational policies, HR practices, and procedures to strengthen scalability and consistency.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, education, computer science, religious studies, nonprofit management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Fluency in English; proficiency in additional languages (Arabic, Urdu, Farsi/Dari, etc.) preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and stakeholder engagement.
- Demonstrated alignment with Islamic values and the ability to confidently represent and uphold these principles with professionalism and wisdom.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in business, nonprofit, education, or community-based organizations.
- Proven ability to recruit, inspire, and manage volunteers while building strong community relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex operations and logistics; ability to lead effectively in a multi-site environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in business administration, nonprofit management, education leadership, public administration, or related discipline.
- Experience managing multiple full-time employees and/or multi-department operations, ideally in a nonprofit setting.
- Experience managing multi-site operations (facilities, staffing, programming, or service delivery).
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, donor engagement, and grant management.
- Experience overseeing facilities and/or security planning, capital improvements, or expansion projects.
