Sacramento Area League of Associated Muslims (SALAM) is seeking dedicated and passionate tutors for our Afterschool Tutoring & Enrichment Program. This program provides academic support and enrichment activities to Afghan refugee youth in Sacramento. Tutors will work directly with students, helping them build confidence, improve academic skills, and foster a love for learning.

This is a grant-funded position, contingent on the availability of grant funds.

General Description

The Afterschool Tutoring & Enrichment Program focuses on academic success, leadership, and personal development for Afghan refugee youth. Tutors will serve as primary academic support staff, working directly with students in small group and one-on-one settings. They will assist with homework, test preparation, and language development, while also engaging students in creative and enrichment activities.

Tutors will collaborate with SALAM management, partner organizations, and facilitators to ensure the program delivers high-quality, culturally relevant support services. The program will be conducted in accordance with SALAM’s Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws, which are based on the teachings of the Islamic faith.

Duties of the Afterschool Tutor

  • Provide homework assistance in subjects such as English, Math, Science, and Social Studies
  • Support English Language Learners (ELL) in reading, writing, and verbal communication
  • Conduct one-on-one and small group tutoring sessions
  • Lead engaging academic and enrichment activities
  • Track and report student progress and attendance
  • Maintain a positive and supportive learning environment
  • Communicate regularly with students, parents, and program staff
  • Refer students to additional support services as needed
  • Report regularly to the Director

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Experience tutoring or mentoring youth
  • Strong knowledge of English, Math, and core academic subjects
  • Ability to work effectively with English Language Learners
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to cultural sensitivity and diversity
  • Availability to work two afternoons/weekends per week
  • Eligible to work in the United States

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience working with Afghan or refugee communities
  • Bilingual in Pashto, Dari, or Farsi
  • Background in education, youth development, or social work

Salary and Benefits

Term: This is an hourly position, grant-funded, and can be terminated at any time with or without cause.

$20 Per hour. This is a contract position and is not eligible for SALAM benefits.
