The Sacramento Area League of Associated Muslims (SALAM) is seeking a compassionate, strategic Executive Director (ED) to lead a vibrant, multi-site, faith-based nonprofit at the heart of the Sacramento-area Muslim community.
This role is ideal for a values-driven leader who believes deeply in community service, inclusive leadership, and the power of faith-rooted institutions to strengthen civic life.
The Executive Director will steward SALAM’s mission, nurture trust and belonging, and guide the organization’s continued growth and impact across religious, educational, youth, and community service programs.

SALAM is a nonprofit Muslim community organization grounded in the values and principles of Islam, committed to spiritual growth, lifelong learning, service to others, and strong partnerships across faiths and communities. SALAM operates across multiple locations and serves as a hub for worship, education, youth development, social connection, and civic engagement.
The Role
The Executive Director serves as SALAM’s chief executive and operational leader, responsible for translating mission and values into effective programs, systems, and community relationships. Working closely with the Board of Trustees, staff, volunteers, and community partners, the ED ensures SALAM operates with excellence, transparency, and compassion while remaining responsive to community needs.
Key Areas of Impact
Community-Centered Leadership
- Serve as a visible, trusted leader within SALAM and the broader community.
- Build strong relationships with congregants, volunteers, partner organizations, and civic and interfaith leaders.
- Represent SALAM publicly with integrity, wisdom, and clarity.
- Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment that reflects SALAM’s values and serves a diverse community.
Programs & Mission Delivery
- Provide leadership for SALAM’s religious, educational, youth, and community service programs.
- Ensure programs are accessible, well-organized, and aligned with community needs.
- Support program leaders and instructors with systems, staffing, and resources.
- Oversee major community events that bring people together in meaningful and safe ways.
Organizational & Operational Stewardship
- Oversee day-to-day operations across multiple locations, including staff, contractors, and volunteers.
- Develop and strengthen operational systems, policies, and procedures that support sustainability and growth.
- Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and governance requirements.
- Provide regular updates and reports to the Board of Trustees.
Facilities, Safety & Care
- Steward SALAM’s physical spaces as safe, welcoming, and well-maintained community assets.
- Oversee facilities operations, vendors, and capital needs.
- Lead safety and security planning for daily operations and large gatherings.
Financial Sustainability & Development
- Partner with the Board to guide SALAM’s financial health and long-term sustainability.
- Develop and manage the annual budget with transparency and care.
- Lead fundraising and donor engagement rooted in trust, stewardship, and community partnership.
- Identify and manage grants that align with SALAM’s mission and values.
Grants, Compliance & Partnerships
- Recruit, support, and supervise staff with an emphasis on clarity, accountability, and growth.
- Foster a healthy organizational culture grounded in respect, service, and professionalism.
- Strengthen volunteer engagement and leadership development across programs and sites.
People & Culture
- Oversee SALAM’s communications strategy across all platforms, including website, email, social media, announcements, flyers, and community updates.
- Ensure messaging is consistent, timely, accurate, and aligned with SALAM’s values, tone, and brand standards across all locations.
- Serve as a primary representative/spokesperson of SALAM as appropriate, including media engagement when needed, in coordination with Board guidance.
- Maintain strong internal communication rhythms with staff, volunteers, program leads, and community stakeholders.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, public administration, education, business, religious studies, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- At least 5 years of leadership experience in nonprofit, community-based, faith-based, or mission-driven organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex operations and work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong communication skills, including public speaking and relationship-building.
- Experience working with volunteers and community partners.
- Fluency in English; additional languages (Arabic, Urdu, Farsi/Dari, etc.) are a plus.
- Demonstrated alignment with Islamic values and comfort leading within a faith-based environment.
Preferred
- Master’s degree in a related field.
- Experience managing staff and multi-site or multi-program operations.
- Fundraising, donor engagement, and grant management experience.
- Experience overseeing facilities, safety planning, or organizational growth.
