Episode 1 | Islamic Institution Building
We are excited to introduce our first ‘Hidden Gems’ guest, Dr. Metwalli Amer.
As a long-time member of the Sacramento community, Dr. Amer has been a key contributor to the growth of the Sacramento Muslim community, and the institutions that support it. In 1987, he founded SALAM, an Islamic Center that promotes Islamic teaching, understanding and unity among all Muslims in the greater Sacramento area.
In addition to the many contributions Dr. Amer has made to building Islamic institutions in the greater Sacramento area, he has been involved in the building of a number of key institutions across the United States alongside some other giant leaders.

Episode 2 | Community Power Building
This week on Episode 2 of “Hidden Gems,” we will be joined by one of our Sacramento Muslim community’s brightest young talents.
Sr. Maheen Ahmed serves as the Legislative Director at the California State Capitol for Assemblymember Rob Bonta. She is the first Muslim – hijabi – woman in such a senior position in the California State Legislature. We will be speaking to her about her journey there, as well as what it means to her and her community.
Maheen is no stranger to the Sacramento Muslim community. She is a product of our community and aims to continue uplifting and empowering young Muslims, just as others have done with her.

Episode 3 | Living with Purpose
This week on Episode 3 of “Hidden Gems,” we will be joined by one of our Sacramento Muslim community’s young imams.
Imam Yasir Khan is the Founder and President of Al-Misbaah, a local Muslim non-profit that focuses on providing charitable aid, refugee assistance to families in need, community education, as well as youth activities. He is also a graduate of Darul Uloom Zakariyya in South Africa, where he studied various Islamic Sciences.
Imam Yasir is Sacramento born and raised and has seen this city and its Muslim community develop over the years. This conversation, God willing, will be full of reflection and insight into how to find purpose in serving mankind with the goal of pleasing our Creator.

Episode 4 | Community Based Healing
This week on Episode 4 of “Hidden Gems,” we will be joined by Dr. Hammad Khan, a Resident Physician at the University of California Davis Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Science and is also currently a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association as part of the prestigious APA Foundation SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program.
What differentiates Dr. Khan from many others in his field is his pain and focus on providing culturally competent medical services to communities that need it most. In 2016, Dr. Khan was recognized by President Barack Obama for his work in providing culturally-competent care for underserved communities, which he continues through his work in leading a community-based mental health clinic at Shifa Community Clinic tailored to meet the unique mental health needs of minority communities.

Episode 5 | Humans, Animals, and the Environment: A Public Health Perspective
This week on Episode 5 of “Hidden Gems,” we will be featuring a very special guest – Dr. Anne Kjemtrup, who has been one of the most committed members of our community.
Dr. Anne is a research and development scientist with the California Department of Public Health, where she works on vector-borne diseases.
We will be touching a bit upon Dr. Anne’s journey from her early career as a wildlife veterinarian to where she is now in the field of Public Health, as well as how the unanticipated connections between humans, animals, and the environment affect our community.

Episode 6 | Importance of Unity
We’re back this week with another episode of “Hidden Gems!”
After a short break, we will be delving into the history of the Sacramento Muslim Community through the perspective of one of our long-time and active community members, Dr. Irfan Haq.
Dr. Haq served for several years as the President of the Council of Sacramento Valley Islamic Organizations (COSVIO), where he worked towards a united, respected and cohesive Muslim community that projects Islam in its true image, and strives for the betterment of the Muslims in Greater Sacramento Area. He will be speaking on the importance of unity among Muslims and supporting the various centers and organizations that provide services to our community.
