Assesments WES 24-25

First-Day Assessment Guidelines

Objective:
To assess students’ current level of understanding based on the curriculum from the previous grade and determine the appropriate grade level for each student. Students will only be considered for movement either one level up or one level down from their current grade.

Assessment Format:
Since individual assessments are not feasible, we will conduct group-based assessments during the first class session. This will allow us to evaluate the students collectively and identify those who may need to be moved up or down a grade.

Assessment Activities:

Quranic Recitation (Group Activity):

  • Activity: Have the students recite a Surah together or in small groups. Listen for fluency and correct pronunciation.
  • Observation Criteria: Identify students who struggle with recitation and those who excel. Note areas where the class as a whole may need improvement.

Written Quiz (Individual but Administered in Class):

  • Activity: Distribute a short written quiz covering key concepts from the previous grade’s Islamic Studies and Arabic lessons. Include a variety of questions such as matching, fill-in-the-blank, and short answers.
  • Observation Criteria: Quickly scan the responses to assess the overall level of understanding in the class. Identify any students who may need extra support or may be ready to advance.

Arabic Reading and Writing (Group Activity):

  • Activity: Provide a passage for the class to read together, or ask them to write a few sentences in Arabic. Observe their reading and writing skills as a group.
  • Observation Criteria: Identify common areas of difficulty and note students who need additional help or those who excel.

Islamic Studies Discussion (Group Activity):

  • Activity: Lead a discussion on a topic from the previous grade’s curriculum, such as a story of a Prophet. Ask open-ended questions to engage the class and assess their understanding.
  • Observation Criteria: Monitor participation and comprehension. Take note of students who show confidence or may need further support.

Teacher Observation and Notes:

  • As you conduct the activities, take notes on student performance, focusing on identifying those who may need to be moved up or down one grade level.
  • Consider grouping students by ability within the class (e.g., pairing stronger students with those who need more help).

Recommendation Section:

After completing the group assessment, please provide your recommendations for each student:

  • Current Grade:
  • Recommended Grade: (Only one level up or down)
  • Comments: (Include any specific observations or concerns)

Communication Protocol:

Once the assessments are complete, please communicate your recommendations with the administration. Do not communicate any grade level changes directly with parents. The administration will handle all communication with parents regarding grade adjustments.

Thank you for your dedication to ensuring each student is placed in the appropriate grade level for their learning needs. Your observations are vital to their success in the program.
