Sacramento Area League of Associated Muslims (SALAM) is seeking an energetic and charismatic Female Resident Scholar. This role will support SALAM’s vision, expand program offerings, and provide services to its diverse multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and multi-generational community in Sacramento, California.

General Description

The Female Resident Scholar serves as a spiritual and educational leader within the community, providing guidance, support, and religious instruction to female members. This position involves leading educational programs, delivering lectures, counseling individuals, conducting seminars and conferences, representing SALAM in local events, and contributing to the overall spiritual and intellectual growth of the community.

Responsibilities

Religious Education and Instruction

  • Conduct classes, seminars, and workshops on various aspects of Islam, including theology, jurisprudence (fiqh), Quranic studies, and prophetic traditions (hadith).
  • Prepare and deliver engaging and informative lectures on relevant religious and contemporary issues, tailored to the needs and interests of female community members.
  • Develop educational materials, resources, and curricula for both formal and informal religious education programs.

Counseling and Spiritual Guidance

  • Provide individual counseling and spiritual guidance to female members of the community, addressing personal, family, and religious concerns.
  • Offer support and advice on matters related to faith, ethics, morality, and interpersonal relationships, based on Islamic teachings and principles.
  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate empathy and compassion in all counseling interactions.

Community Engagement and Outreach

  • Engage actively with the female members of the community, building relationships, fostering inclusivity, and addressing their spiritual and social needs.
  • Organize and participate in community events, gatherings, and celebrations, promoting unity, cooperation, and mutual understanding among community members.
  • Collaborate with other religious leaders, educators, and community organizations to facilitate interfaith dialogue, social justice initiatives, and community development projects.

Leadership and Mentorship

  • Serve as a role model and mentor for female community members, encouraging them to develop their spiritual, intellectual, and leadership potential.
  • Empower and support women in assuming active roles within the community, including volunteering, organizing events, and contributing to decision-making processes.
  • Promote gender equity, diversity, and inclusion within the community, advocating for the rights and dignity of all members.

Research and Scholarship

  • Engage in scholarly research and study, keeping abreast of developments in Islamic thought, jurisprudence, and contemporary issues affecting Muslims.
  • Produce written works, articles, and publications on topics relevant to Islamic studies, offering insights and perspectives grounded in traditional scholarship and contemporary relevance.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Islamic studies, theology, or related field is required. Work experience and/or credentialed certifications may compensate for the education requirement.
  • In-depth knowledge of Islamic theology, jurisprudence, Quranic exegesis, and prophetic traditions.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to articulate complex theological concepts in a clear and accessible manner.
  • Demonstrated commitment to gender equity, social justice, and inclusivity within the Muslim community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Islamic studies, theology, or a related field.
  • Fluency in relevant languages (such as Arabic, Urdu, and Dari).
