SALAM’s Outreach at Schools and Universities
February 2025
January was a busy and productive month for SALAM’s outreach efforts, with several impactful presentations and events promoting awareness and understanding of Islam. Here’s a recap of recent activities:
Raising Awareness in Schools
Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD): On January 27, 2025, Asif Haq presented to 45 school teachers at Masjid Annur. This was the first session of its kind, organized in collaboration with Masjid Annur’s management, to educate teachers about Islam and the needs of Muslim students. With Ramadan approaching, the discussion highlighted fasting, prayer accommodations, and ways to support students observing Ramadan in school. We encourage other districts to offer similar learning opportunities to foster inclusivity.
Grass Valley Charter School: On January 29, 2025, Asif conducted two presentations for 7th-grade students. The session sparked curiosity, with students asking 35 insightful questions. This was the school’s first invitation to SALAM, and we look forward to continued engagement.
Community & University Engagement
California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) Visit to SALAM: Dr. Anne Kjemtrup and Asif Haq hosted a tour and discussion for university students. The visit led to a dynamic exchange of ideas on Islam and faith in modern society. Special thanks to Dr. Sarah Strand of Sacramento State, who has been bringing her Psychology of Religion students to SALAM for many years.
Ramadan Presentation to Soroptimists: Dr. Anne presented an engaging session on Ramadan to members of the Soroptimists, an organization focused on women’s empowerment through education. The event, arranged by Dr. Rosalie Amer, was well received, with attendees expressing gratitude for the warm and informative discussion.
Upcoming Event – Girl Scouts World Thinking Day
SALAM is excited to host World Thinking Day in partnership with the Girl Scouts on Saturday, February 22, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Led by Dr. Anne, this event will celebrate cultural awareness and global unity.
